Project 001.1 (completed)
Emergency support for Sewalanka Foundation's tsunami appeal
What did my donation go towards?
The purchase of textbooks and photocopying of final year high school student notes that had been lost in the tsunami.
Who was the project partnered with?
Sewalanka Foundation was established in 1993 as a development non-government organisation and employs over 500 Sri Lankans.
It has vast local experience in building infrastructure such as schools, roads, wells and toilets, managing micro-finance programs, supporting local sustainable agriculture and fisheries, education programmes and peace development.
Sewalanka Foundation is registered under the Charities Registration Act, Registration Number L16806.
Who implemented the project?
Within minutes of the tsunami striking the coastline Sewalanka Foundation staff, in eleven coastal districts, began responding to the immediate emergency needs of the people worst affected.
During the first week local field-staff utilised every capacity and asset at their immediate disposal to assist bereaved and displaced families. Staff worked around the clock, some not sleeping for several days, in close collaboration with all local government agencies and the respective government agents in each district and the LTTE in the north.
Sewalanka Foundation now has an even greater need to deliver long-term support and rehabilitation to tsunami affected communities throughout the country. For more information: www.sewalanka.org
What was 001's financial support?
The total funds raised totalled over Au$8000. The money was transferred directly to the Sewlanka Foundation’s tsunami appeal in February, 2005.
