Turning local ideas into sustainable projects

About us

How 001 began

The embryo of 001 was formed by Ben Cole after returning from a 10 month project working at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka under the Australian Youth Ambassador for Development program. Ben lived and worked in Ampara and travelled throughout the eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

Why the east coast of Sri Lanka?

The east coast of Sri Lanka has been chronically under-resourced during the last 20 years. The majority of the coastal communities lack basic infrastructure such as hospitals, roads and access to clean drinking water.

The Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 cemented the need for ongoing and sustained support for the rehabilitation of the coastal towns and communities throughout the east coast of Sri Lanka.

Who manages 001?

001 was incorporated by the NSW Fair Trading Department in February 2005. It is non-government and non-religious. It is managed by a 7-person volunteer committee.

  • Ben Cole - Vice Chair
